Why do we use pepper?
Greetings friends,
Today, let’s talk about herbs.
Why? Because herbs are more than just tasty additions to your favorite dishes! Many herbs have properties that help improve your memory, calm your anxieties, help you absorb nutrients, and more.
Here are a few standouts that are probably already in your cupboard.
Cinnamon is sweet and delicious, and it is wonderful for digestion and circulation. It also increases production of insulin. Add a little bit to your coffee grounds in the morning or add it to yogurt or fruit. For breakfast, I make quinoa and add some blueberries and cinnamon. Nutritious and delicious!
Ginger is my go-to herb when I feel like I am getting a cold or the flu. It also aids digestion, reduces inflammation, reduces nausea, and may even help reduce cholesterol. Did you know it keeps well in the freezer? I don’t even peel it. I just break it into pieces and put it in a bag. I take out a piece when I want it for soups or smoothies. It is also wonderful as tea. Slice up some ginger and pour boiling water over it. Let it steep for 30 minutes or so and add some honey to taste.
Rosemary stimulates the circulatory system and can help enhance memory, focus, and even clear up headaches. You can cook with it, of course, but don’t overlook rosemary tea. Fresh or dried rosemary steeped in boiling water is a delicious, sugar- and caffeine-free, afternoon pick-me-up.
Black pepper has been shown to help you absorb nutrients and it stimulates digestion. There is a reason it is a staple on dinner tables around the world. You can find black, white, green, or red peppercorns. All are from the same plant. They are just harvested at different times and treated differently. I personally like the pretty colors of mixed peppercorns but go with what makes you happy.
And this is just the beginning! Your kitchen is an apothecary! I invite you to include herbs with every meal and see what happens.
Wishing you a wonderful spring!
Lisa
